The project involves students of architecture from Universitas Indonesia, exposing them to real-life problems and issues, and offering opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills directly into the community. The project becomes the trigger for the community, which opens various possibilities for further improvement. By facilitating the community in developing space for their own everyday life, we hope that they would be able to continue the development towards better living and a better environment. The project has been awarded Holcim Award Asia Pacific in 2011.
The project develops the school library as the heart of the school. It transforms the previously abandoned school space into the library that acts as the “machine for learning”; It consists of a series of elements that play different roles to promote literacy, to establish a sense of curiousity, and to build positive learning experiences.
School library projects have been implemented in various primary schools in Jakarta and Depok from 2009 to 2014.
The project manages a small intervention programme as a model for responding appropriately to the needs of the community through integration of research, programming and design. It involves design strategies to promote healthy living by supporting each individual dwelling in managing various service activities within limited dwelling space, based on the understanding of the everyday domestic service activities practised collectively by the residents.
