Architectural Design Research Cluster at Universitas Indonesia aims to develop research and design as integrated activities. The research scope includes various themes related to everyday and local spatial practice, relationship between architecture and users’ wellbeing, ecology and sustainability, interiority and the development of innovative design approaches based on research.
Our works integrate research and design practice to explore innovative design methods and approaches, to experiment on creative representational media, and to establish responsive and appropriate design practices that respond to current issues as well as project future possibilities.
The idea of interiority allows us to develop research programmes to enhance human health and well-being, focusing on emerging human-environment relationships and covering a wide range of spatial contexts, scales, and users.
The emphasis towards cultural and spatial practices enable us to address how space is shaped and produced in relation to society’s distinct way of doing, enabling micro and macro design approach rooted in society’s everyday life.
Our posthuman research and teaching practices decenters the anthropocentric perspectives of architecture; covering topics such as multispecies living practices, hybrid relations of architecture and machine, and architecture amidst climate crisis and brokenness.
Our teaching practice becomes a ground for experimenting with creative pedagogy to promote design thinking with creative and innovative approaches, from first-year foundational design learning to postgraduate design research, while at the same time promoting awareness of ethical practice.
We establish the practices of community engagement grounded on research and creative design approaches to respond to current society needs, ranging from post-disaster design, community participatory design, circular practice, and environmental education.
