History

History of Medical Physics and Biophysics

The Medical Physics and Biophysics Group is part of the Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI). Its development builds upon the department’s longstanding commitment to physics education, research, and the application of physics to address challenges in health and biological sciences.

Medical Physics has evolved as an important specialization within the department, focusing on the application of physics in healthcare, particularly in diagnostic imaging, radiation therapy, and medical technology. In 1990, Medical Physics became one of the specializations in the postgraduate Physics program. The department subsequently established the Master’s Program in Medical Physics in 2022 and the Medical Physics Professional Program in 2025, strengthening its contribution to medical physics education and professional development in Indonesia.

Biophysics complements this focus by applying physical principles and quantitative methods to understand biological systems and processes. Together, Medical Physics and Biophysics provide an interdisciplinary foundation for research spanning medical imaging, radiation science, biomedical instrumentation, biological measurements, and computational approaches to healthcare and life sciences.

Today, the group continues to support education, research, and innovation at the intersection of physics, biology, and medicine, contributing to scientific advancement and the development of healthcare technologies.
