Medical Physics and Biophysics Division

The Medical Physics and Biophysics Division is part of the Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI). Our division focuses on applying the principles and methods of physics to advance healthcare, biomedical science, and the understanding of biological systems.

Through interdisciplinary research, we integrate experimental physics, quantitative measurements, mathematical modeling, computational methods, and artificial intelligence to address challenges in medical diagnosis, cancer treatment, biomedical imaging, and biological characterization. We are committed to advancing scientific knowledge, fostering innovation, and developing future researchers through research, education, and collaboration.

Our division encompasses four research subgroups, each with distinct expertise and complementary research interests.

Radiation Oncology Physics

This subgroup focuses on the physics of radiation therapy for cancer treatment, including radiation dosimetry, treatment planning, dose verification, quality assurance, and advanced radiotherapy techniques. Its research aims to improve treatment accuracy, optimize radiation delivery, and enhance patient safety.

Diagnostic Radiology Physics

This subgroup focuses on the physical principles and technical performance of diagnostic medical imaging systems. Research activities include image quality assessment, radiation dose optimization, quality assurance, and the development of methods to improve the safety and effectiveness of diagnostic imaging technologies.

Nuclear Medicine Physics

This subgroup applies physics and computational methods to nuclear medicine imaging and radionuclide-based therapies. Its research encompasses quantitative imaging, internal dosimetry, radiation dose estimation, and computational approaches to support the development of personalized nuclear medicine procedures.

Biophysics

This subgroup applies physical principles, experimental techniques, and computational approaches to investigate biological systems and biomedical phenomena. Research activities include Raman and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, biomedical imaging, chemometrics, signal processing, artificial intelligence, and mathematical modeling for biological characterization and biomedical applications.

Our Mission

Our mission is to advance physics-based research and education that contribute to scientific progress, healthcare innovation, and human well-being. We strive to:

  • Conduct rigorous and innovative research in medical physics and biophysics.
  • Develop experimental, quantitative, and computational methods for biomedical applications.
  • Educate and mentor students to become competent researchers and professionals.
  • Promote interdisciplinary and international research collaborations.
  • Translate scientific advances into practical approaches with potential clinical and societal impact.

Through research, education, and collaboration, the Medical Physics and Biophysics Division at Universitas Indonesia seeks to contribute to the advancement of medical technology, biomedical science, and human health.
