Commonly known as Jemi, he is a lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Indonesia. He earned his Ph.D. from the Asia Research Centre at Murdoch University, where his dissertation examined labour mobilization and the politics of production in Indonesia. His research interests lie in political economy, with particular emphasis on labour politics, urban politics, and political ecology. He teaches a range of courses, including Urban Politics, Labor Politics and Industrial Relations, and Globalization and Politics in Indonesia. His research primarily explores power relations within the social relations of production, forms of resistance among workers and citizens, and the implications of public policy for social justice and the protection of labour and citizens’ rights. Beyond academia, Jemi is actively involved in labor organizing. He is a member of the Campus Workers’ Union (Serikat Pekerja Kampus or SPK) and currently serves as Chair of the Universitas Indonesia Workers’ Association (Paguyuban Pekerja Universitas Indonesia). In addition to his academic work, Jemi actively collaborates with social and cultural initiatives. He has worked with the collective ruangrupa (Jakarta) and Musyawarah Arsip (Makassar/Jakarta) on a variety of collaborative projects. His contributions include producing publications, conducting research and writing workshops and speaking at public forums.
Her academic career reflects a sustained commitment to the study of politics, governance, and political economy across national and international contexts. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (1984–1991), where she developed a strong foundation in political theory, comparative politics, public administration, and policy analysis. During this period, she cultivated a lasting interest in the relationship between state institutions, democratic governance, and social development. She continued her studies at Ohio University, United States, completing a Master of Arts in Political Science (1994–1996). There, she broadened her perspective through comparative and international approaches to politics, engaging with issues of democratization, governance, public policy, and global political change. Her graduate studies strengthened her interdisciplinary outlook and comparative research skills. She later completed a Doctorate in Political Economy at Victoria University, Australia (2009–2014). Her doctoral research examined the intersections of politics, economics, and public policy, with particular attention to governance, institutional development, and sustainable socio-economic transformation in both national and global settings. She currently serves as the Head of the Postgraduate Program in the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Indonesia, where she leads academic development, postgraduate education, and research initiatives while mentoring emerging scholars in political science.
He is a lecturer in the Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Indonesia, where he teaches and conducts research on Indonesian politics, Southeast Asian affairs, and security studies. He earned the International Master’s in Regional Integration (IMRI), a joint degree awarded by Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain, and Universiti Malaya, Malaysia, which provided him with interdisciplinary perspectives on regionalism, international cooperation, and comparative political development. He later earned his doctorate in Defense Studies at Universitas Pertahanan Republik Indonesia, graduating cum laude. His doctoral dissertation examined the strategic responses of Southeast Asian countries to the South China Sea dispute and assessed their implications for Indonesia’s maritime security and regional stability. His research explores the intersections of domestic politics, regional geopolitics, maritime security, and defence policy, with a particular focus on Indonesia’s role within the evolving Indo-Pacific strategic landscape. Beyond academia, he serves as Executive Director of the Institute for Strategic Research (ISR) and as a Political Fellow at the National Security and Policy Centre of Indonesia (NASPCI). He regularly contributes political analysis to leading Indonesian media outlets and participates in national and international research collaborations, policy discussions, and strategic advisory initiatives concerning governance, regional security, and foreign policy.
He attended Islamic boarding school for six years in Watampone and Makassar before earning degrees in Comparative Politics (2012) and Southeast Asian Studies (2026) from Universitas Indonesia, Depok/Jakarta. Based between Makassar and Jakarta, he works as a cultural worker and researcher. He is a part of the Jakarta-based collective ruangrupa and worked on the artistic team of documenta fifteen / lumbung one in Kassel, Germany (2019–2022). In 2018, he co-founded Riwanua in Makassar with fellow researchers and cultural activists, followed by Musyawarah Arsip (Makassar / Jakarta) in 2024. His editorial projects include Imajinasi Kebudayaan: Kompilasi Pidato Kebudayaan DKJ 1998–2012 (Koalisi Seni, 2013); 20Kuldesak: Networking, Rebelling, Maneuvering, Moving (Kuldesak Network, 2018); and Hilmar Farid’s Perang Suara: Bahasa dan Politik Pergerakan (Komunitas Bambu, 2023). He has spoken at institutions including Global Art Practice, Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts (2024), Symposium on Socially Engage Art, FEINART Network, University of Iceland (Reykjavík, 2022); Guest Lecturer, Post-Graduate Programme in Curating, Zurich University of the Arts, ZHdK (Zurich, 2023); Faculty of Art, Music and Design, Birzeit University, Palestine (2021). Since 2019, he has contributed to the History–Memory–Commemoration project and in 2025, his research-based art project, Alhamdulillah, Our Name is GANEFO, was exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp, Belgium.
