FOUNDATIONS

Bridging science, policy & society

For over a decade, the Systems Engineering, Modeling & Simulation Laboratory (SEMS Lab) has produced policy models supporting national decision-making in renewable energy, logistics, and the circular economy. Yet a persistent gap remains between research output and its uptake by stakeholders.

The System Design and Management Research Cluster is a structured platform that consolidates research direction, fosters cross-disciplinary collaboration, and strengthens UI’s contribution to solving national and global problems through systems thinking — with explicit alignment to the SDGs and Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission targets.

Our Vision

To be a centre of excellence in the design and management of complex systems that are sustainable, resilient, and just — through multi-method modelling and deep stakeholder engagement.

Our Mission

To realize this vision, this cluster has established several main missions as follows:

Systemic research for sustainable transitions

Focused on energy, logistics, industry, and the environment — with emphasis on just transitions and resilience under uncertainty.

Serious simulation games for co-learning

Using games as efficient instruments to transfer complex knowledge, enabling open dialogue and shared scenario-building among stakeholders.

Cross-disciplinary collaboration

Building synergy across engineering, public policy, economics, environment, and the social sciences to manage transitional change holistically.
