Prof. Hikmahanto Juwana has been a faculty member in the Department of International Law at the Faculty of Law, Universitas Indonesia, since 1988. He earned his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the Faculty of Law, Universitas Indonesia, a Master of International Law from the Faculty of Law, Keio University, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Law from the Faculty of Law, University of Nottingham.
In 2001, he was appointed Full Professor and delivered his inaugural professorial lecture entitled International Law in the Conflict of Economic Interests Between Developing and Developed Countries. At the age of 36, Prof. Hikmahanto became the youngest professor in the history of Universitas Indonesia at that time.
In 2004, he was appointed as the youngest Dean of the Faculty of Law, Universitas Indonesia. Throughout his academic career, Prof. Hikmahanto has received recognition from both domestic and international academic institutions. He has taught various law courses at several leading universities in Indonesia and has served as a Visiting Professor at the University of Melbourne, the National University of Singapore, and Nagoya University, Japan. As an independent researcher, he has authored numerous books, journal articles, and research papers on various aspects of international law, business law, and space law.
Since 17 April 2020, Prof. Hikmahanto has also served as the Rector of Universitas Jenderal Achmad Yani (UNJANI), Cimahi. Beyond academia, he has extensive experience in public service, including serving as Expert Advisor to the Attorney General of the Republic of Indonesia (14 January 2020–2021); Member of the International Law Expert Group of the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) (1 August 2016–31 August 2017); Member of the Academic Drafting Team for the Amendment of Law No. 10 of 1997 on Nuclear Energy for the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) (13 January 2016); Member of the Expert Team of the Task Force on Combating Illegal Fishing under the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (14 December 2015); Member of the Special Legal Expert Team of the Ministry of Defence (6 January–31 December 2015); Member of the Legal Review Team on State-Owned Enterprises (Civil Law Reinforcement) at the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (since 5 January 2015); Member of the Legal Task Force of the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (since September 2011); Member of the Tax Supervisory Commission of the Ministry of Finance (March 2010–March 2013); Legal Expert to the Ministry of Defence (since February 2010); Expert Staff to the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs (1999–2001); Member of the Expert Commission of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (2004–2005); and Consultant to the National Development Planning Agency (BAPPENAS) as Advisor on Commercial Court Empowerment (2001–2002).
Prof. Hikmahanto has also built an extensive professional career in the legal sector. His appointments include Independent Commissioner of PT Unilever Indonesia Tbk (2011–2021), Member of the Supervisory Board of Bank Indonesia (March 2017–July 2020), Independent Commissioner of PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (May 2009–May 2017), and Independent Commissioner of PT Tugu Reasuransi Indonesia (2008–2012). In addition, he has provided numerous legal opinions and expert advice to both private institutions and individual clients.
