Introduction

The Emerging Microbes and Infectious Diseases Research Group is an interdisciplinary unit focused on comprehensive studies related to the emergence, spread, and health impacts of new pathogenic microorganisms. The establishment of this group is based on the need for robust scientific capacity to address the dynamics of modern infectious diseases, including increasing antimicrobial resistance and potential public health emergencies.

In the past decade, the world has faced the emergence of new pathogens and increasingly complex variants—from SARS‑CoV‑2 and influenza variants to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This research group is committed to anticipating, identifying, and developing evidence-based control strategies through integrated research, combining molecular epidemiology, immunology, genomics, and bioinformatics to generate impactful policies and innovations.

Research focus includes

  1. Viral Emerging Diseases: Identification and characterization of novel viruses, molecular epidemiology studies, and development of rapid detection methods.
  2. Host–Pathogen Interaction: Investigation of molecular interactions between pathogens and hosts, including immune responses and evasion mechanisms.
  3. One Health Approach: Integration of human, animal, and environmental health aspects to understand the dynamics of infectious diseases.
  4. Molecular Diagnostics and Vaccines: Development of molecular-based diagnostic platforms for rapid and accurate detection of emerging pathogens, as well as preventive and therapeutic vaccines vaccines based on various platforms of vaccines and probiotics.

Objectives of the Research Group :

  1. To become a center of excellence in emerging microbes and infectious disease research in Indonesia.
  2. To establish collaborative networks with national and international research institutions in the fields of microbiology and infectious diseases.
  3. To conduct fundamental research on the characteristics of pathogenic microorganisms and/or newly emerging microbial strains.
  4. To improve resiliency and pandemic preparedness through academic health approach.
  5. To contribute to the development of diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines for emerging microbes and infectious disease.
  6. To develop innovative anti-microbial drugs and probiotics for emerging microbes and infectious disease.
