The “History, Theory, Heritage, and Vernacular Architecture” research cluster focuses on the development that connects the historical understanding of Indonesian architecture or Nusantara within the global discourse. The cluster also highlights and implements a multidisciplinary approach that combines conservation, historiography, and analytical methodology in research. The exploration expands beyond architectural forms, but also studies social, political, economic, philosophical, and material contexts that shaped and influenced the existence, interpretation, and preservation of architecture. With this approach, this research cluster aims to develop a deeper and critical understanding relevant to current and contemporary issues, such as climate change, social inequality, and geopolitical dynamics that contribute to society, government, and industry. The research cluster perceives heritage preservation as an innovation by implementing state-of-the-art technology, such as 3D-scanning, photogrammetry, and digital modelling, combined with critical reflection and community engagement. This research cluster will produce new knowledge, expand international networks, and strengthen the role of Universitas Indonesia in the scholarly map of architecture in the Global South.
