Understanding society through text and talk

The Text, Talk, and Society research cluster brings together researchers on descriptive and applied linguistics interested in tackling written, spoken, and multimodal corpus data. In the cluster, we explore language from the smallest units to the larger level used by society in the real and virtual contexts. Society implies language users in various, context-specific social spheres, such as urban-oriented areas, popular works, social and digital media. Our linguistic data are thus an important feature in our research. Through these analytical and investigative work, we are revealing the interplay of language and social reality as well as proposing strategic communication to improve literacy and support equity and inclusivity towards sustainable society.
