Sustainability challenges have become a defining global concern. However, identifying root causes and setting policy targets alone are insufficient to generate meaningful transformation. Achieving sustainability requires behavioral change supported by individuals, organizations, and communities. The persistent gap between awareness and action, policy and practice, and scientific knowledge and behavior remains a central obstacle in contemporary sustainability efforts.
This article emphasizes the importance of integrating behavioral transformation with knowledge system integration to advance sustainability action. While global initiatives often prioritize green technologies and environmental policies, many interventions fail because they overlook psychological, socio-cultural, and institutional factors that shape decision-making processes. Infrastructure provision and financial mechanisms alone are insufficient without community acceptance, local context sensitivity, and alignment with social norms.
Drawing from interdisciplinary perspectives, the article highlights the philosophical foundation of environmental science, which balances environmental, economic, and human dimensions. It underscores the importance of integrating modern scientific approaches with traditional and local knowledge systems, such as indigenous water governance practices, to enhance conservation effectiveness and long-term sustainability outcomes. Additionally, the role of organizational transformation—particularly through Green Human Resource Management (GHRM)—is discussed as a mechanism to drive behavioral change within institutional settings.
This work frames behavioral transformation and multi-knowledge system integration as fundamental pathways toward adaptive, inclusive, and enduring sustainability action across diverse geographic and sectoral contexts.
