Biography

Prof. Wellyzar Sjamsuridzal, Ph.D., born on April 8, 1968, in Banjarmasin, graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Universitas Indonesia in 1991, and received an M.Sc. and Ph.D. from The University of Tokyo with a Japanese Government Monbusho scholarship. Since joining Universitas Indonesia in 1991, she has served as a Civil Servant Lecturer and, in 2024, became a Professor of Systematics and Prospecting of Microorganisms.

Her research, supported by numerous grants, includes descriptions of novel taxa of bacteria and fungi by polyphasic taxonomy, molecular identification, yeast diversity, yeasts as pollen substitutes, tempeh starter diversity, and microbial studies in geothermal areas based on culture-dependent and culture-independent methods. She has published widely in Scopus-indexed journals and holds three patents on pollen substitutes for honey bees. Additionally, she has been involved in international collaboration, joint publications, and joint supervision of graduate students with foreign professors.

Since 2022, she has served as a Jury Member for the L’Oreal-UNESCO For Women in Science National Fellowship and has led the Center of Excellence for Indigenous Biological Resources-Genome Studies at FMIPA UI since 2013. Her work significantly contributes to biological research and innovation, particularly in the fields of systematics and microbial prospecting in Indonesia.
