“Under Design” Triggers Workplace Accidents on Infrastructure Projects

Numerous accidents on several infrastructure projects have tarnished the government’s vision of accelerating development. The Executive Director of the Center for Sustainable Infrastructure Development (CSID), Mohammed Ali Berawi, stated that workplace accidents are generally caused by poor quality work and construction products.
“Several factors contributing to poor quality and workplace accidents are due to designs that do not meet the criteria and specifications expected for the resulting construction product (under design),” Ali stated during the Public Discussion “Designing Real Action for the National Construction Safety Movement” at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia, Depok, Wednesday (2/28/2018). During the implementation phase, Ali explained, workplace accidents are caused by the selection of work methods, materials, and equipment, as well as worker competency, which are not focused on the process and producing a quality and safe product.

Meanwhile, during the use of construction products, accidents can be caused by product usage outside of the planned scope and poor maintenance.Responding to the deadline, Ali Berawi explained that accelerating project completion can be achieved through a crash program, taking into account additional resources, including the readiness to allocate additional costs, human resources, production equipment, work methods, and so on. “Supervision and control functions must be carried out with discipline and consistency to ensure the quality of work and product results comply with required standard procedures and specifications,” Ali stated.

He added that project completion can also be accelerated by increasing precast production by building new factories on site and establishing joint operations with other companies.Furthermore, he added, increasing the shift of competent human resources and ensuring operational equipment can also accelerate project completion. “On the other hand, policy harmonization and synergy across ministries are also needed to improve the performance of the construction industry,” Ali explained.
