Mulia Research Group (MRG)

A subdivision of Deep-time Geodynamics, Universitas Indonesia

We are a new team that combines geology and AI/machine learning research. Our main geological focuses are economic geology, resource exploration, and structural geology.

Our primary research objective is to maximise the use of geological relationships by structuring them into interconnected data networks. This enables us to apply relational deep learning techniques to solve complex geological problems.

We are open to collaboration with industry and academia.

Research & Teaching

Our research emphasises the geology-first approach. The AI is utilised as a tool to address geological and mineral exploration problems rather than merely feeding geological data into the AI model.

MRG provides courses on applying AI in geology, specifically designed for geologists. They are made by geologists for other geologists and geology students

University courses taught by MRG team:

  • Ore Geology (SCGL603524)
  • Machine Learning in Geology (SCGL604169)
  • Computational Geology (SCGL602224)
  • Geological Exploration (SCGL603626)
  • Structural Geology (SCGL602305)
  • Ore Body Modelling (SCGL603247)

Industry Partnership

MRG can support exploration teams in integrating AI into their workflow through various services, including:

  • Consultation for adopting AI in early to late stage exploration, combining tried-and-tested conventional techniques with AI techniques
  • Short course tailored for geologists at different levels (from field geologist to C-level)
  • Troubleshooting AI pipelines
  • Implementing No-code AI and Low-code AI (requires almost no coding)
  • Independent evaluation of AI tools or AI predictions
  • Data labelling, data scraping, and data cleaning for AI model training
  • Field data collection for AI applications
  • Assisting academic research and publication

Principal Investigator : Felix Sihombing

Felix has been teaching at Universitas Indonesia since 2017. Before that, he began his career as an exploration geologist, an experience that continues to influence his geological interests to this day. He gradually became interested in geodata science and AI for mineral exploration, which are the focus of his doctoral research.

Felix’s experience, research, and teaching strategically positioned him to bridge the gap between industry and academia and to connect geologists with data scientists.

Education:

Past Work Experience:

  • Rio Tinto – Geodata Analyst Intern
  • Micromine Indonesia – Geomodeller & Trainer
  • PT ENJ (Affiliate of Freeport McMoRan) – Exploration Geologist
